SHAKESPEAREAN & THESPIAN SOCIETY AUDITION & CASTING F.A.Q.'s
What should I expect at my audition?
Arrive 15-20mins ahead of your audition's scheduled start time. Use that time to warm up your voice/body.
There will be a waiting area for all actors awaiting their audition start time. Please wait quietly until your name is called by the Stage Manager.
Be prepared to offer a short presentation of your material to the casting panel. No material need be memorized, but you should be ready and willing to adapt in response to requests from the Director.
What should I prepare for my audition?
To be considered for our non-Shakespearean Thespian Society plays, please prepare 2 brief (1-2 minute) monologues. There are few restrictions on your choice of monologue - it could be tragic or comic; it could be a passage from a book, your favorite poem, an excerpt from a historical speech, a monologue from a TV show or movie, or the instruction manual to your favorite board game! Be creative in your choice. Your monologue does not need to be memorized. Prepare to read more than once and respond to requests from the director.
To be considered for our Shakespearean Society plays, please be prepared to read from one of four sides. If you choose a monologue, you will be auditioning alone. If you choose a dialogue, you may audition with a scene partner. This does not necessarily mean you will both be called back or read together during callbacks. Your monologue or dialogue does not need to be memorized. Prepare to read more than once and respond to requests from the director.
HOMER SHAKESPEAREAN & THESPIAN SOCIETY CASTING POLICY
The Homer Shakespearean & Thespian Societies always strives to cast fairly, with the goal of assembling a cast and crew that will serve the directorial vision for the production.
Casting decisions are not based on seniority (class year in school), nor on the number of years of participation in the program. No roles are ever precast.
Auditioning for a show can be competitive and even intimidating. In keeping with the program's emphasis on using theater as a vehicle for artistic and personal growth, staff members are available to coach and support students as they seek to improve their speaking, presentation, and performance skills through the audition process.
Whenever possible, all students who audition are ultimately offered a role in the production that is seen as the best fit for them and based on the particular needs of the production. No student will be rejected from participation except on the grounds of academic/disciplinary eligibility regulations as set by the Homer High School Student Code of Conduct. We do our best to provide all students with their first, second, or third choice of roles.
ANOTHER NOTE ON CASTING
Casting a high school production is a complex process. Directors must choose the students who best fit the roles both by the individual skills they present in auditions, but also in the dynamics that develop between actors who will be creating the driving energy of the show in scenes together. The more you audition, the better you become. The feeling of "rejection" can be a difficult and even painful one, but you should get back up on your feet and get ready to work in order to hone your skills. Every actor experiences enormous success and enormous disappointment at some point in their career. If you deal with both of these feelings in high school, you will be ever more prepared to navigate your way in a complicated world after you leave.
We need many more volunteers than just actors. We will need assistant directors, dramaturgs, scenic designers, assistant costumers, makeup artists, run crew, lighting and sound operators, box office staff and ushers, and assistant stage managers. If you are interested in being on the Technical Crew for the fall and/or spring production, please indicate that interest on the Technical Crew Sign Up Form below.
